Trichomoniasis is an STD caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.
Trichomoniasis is transmitted through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex and genital touching.
It oftens causes no symptoms, though it can lead to genital itching, pain during intercourse or urination, and smelly vaginal discharge that is described as having a fishy odor. The vaginal discharge can be white, yellow, or greenish. In men, symptoms may include irritation or itching inside the penis, discharge, and burning after ejaculation or urination. If symptoms occur, they generally occur 5-28 days after infection.
It is a curable STI that is treated with antibiotics, most commonly metronidazole or tinidazole.
It is important that all sexual partners are treated to prevent reinfection.
If left untreated, it can increase the risk of acquiring or spreading other STIs, including HIV, and may cause pregnancy complications.
If infection is found, treatment will be sent to the pharmacy you tell the provider.
The test will be conducted by a urine sample.
