The thyroid produces thyroid hormone, which functions to establish the body's metabolism and regulate body temperature. The thyroid function affects your body's energy production, heart rate, digestion, cholesterol metabolism, immune function, and mood.

In fact, the thyroid is a vital organ. Without the thyroid and no replacement hormone therapy (either T4 or T3 medications), a human being could only live for a few weeks to a few months before running out of thyroid hormone, placing the person at risk for a medical condition called a myxedema coma, which is an end stage of severe hypothyroidism characterized by extreme lethargy, hypothermia, slow heart rate, and coma. Without emergency intervention, this condition leads to respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and death.
