Hepatitis C Screening Test

The screening test to check for hepatitis C is the Hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV) test.

The antibody test checks to see if you have ever been exposed to the hepatitis C virus. If you have, your body will have formed antibodies against it and this will show up as reactive on the test.

If your antibody test is reactive, it does not mean you currently have the virus, as it can remain positive after a resolved infection.

So if the antibody test comes back reactive, then a confirmatory HCV RNA test will then be done to see if you have an active infection.

A qualitative HCV RNA test will simply tell if the hepatitis C virus is present or not.

A quantitative HCV RNA test will measure the quantity of the hepatitis C virus in the body.
