The Hepatitis B Panel test is a blood test consisting of a triple panel of 3 tests: the Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (HBsAb/Anti-HBs), and the Hepatitis B Core Antibody (HBcAb/Anti-HBc).
The Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) test indicates current infection with hepatitis B (either acute or chronic). HBsAg is a protein on the surface of a hepatitis B virus. It can be detected in high levels in the blood during acute or chronic hepatitis B virus infection. Presence of HBsAg indicates that the person is infectious. If HBsAg is not found in the serum, the person is not currently infected with the hepatitis B virus.
The Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (HBsAb/Anti-HBs) test indicates immunity from a vaccine or previous infection. The presence of anti-HBs is generally interpreted as indicating recovery and immunity from hepatitis B virus infection or that a person has been successfully vaccinated against hepatitis B.
The Hepatitis B Core Antibody (HBcAb/Anti-HBc) test indicates exposure to the virus. It appears at the onset of symptoms in acute hepatitis B and persists for life. The presence of anti-HBc indicates previous or ongoing infection with hepatitis B virus in an undefined time frame.
