The HIV Ag/Ab test is a blood test which checks for infection with HIV.
A 4th generation HIV Ag/Ab test will be done. This test simultaneously detects HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies (Ab) and the HIV-1 p24 antigen, allowing for earlier detection (typically 18–45 days after exposure) than older tests. It identifies infection 2–3 weeks post-exposure by spotting the p24 antigen, which appears before antibodies develop, making it highly accurate.
A non-reactive result typically means no HIV infection was detected. A reactive result indicates the potential presence of HIV, requiring a follow-up differentiation assay. If the test is repeatedly reactive, a HIV-1/2 antibody differentiation immunoassay will next be done to confirm the diagnosis.
