Drug Screening Test

The drug screening test screens for common drugs requested, usually for employment purposes.

The most common type of drug testing is the urine drug tests, which screens for opiates, amphetamines, barbiturates, cannabinoids, cocaine, benzodiazepines, methadone, PCP (6-Phencyclidine).

Urine creatinine is measured alongside a Drugs of Abuse (DAU) screen to ensure sample validity, detecting if a sample is too dilute (< 4.0 mmol/L) or altered. It acts as a marker of normal kidney function, confirming the sample is genuine human urine. Low creatinine can suggest tampering, while high levels may indicate kidney disease.

Urine testing is the most common method for drug testing (90% of employers use it). Urine testing is cost-effective and can detect recent use (up to a week). It is non-invasive and results are obtained quickly. Cons include the results can be more easily tampered with or diluted (easier to cheat).

Serum testing is more accurate. Serum testing provides precise, quantitative, and reliable data on the exact concentration of a substance in the bloodstream. However, one drawback is that it has a shorter detection time, limited to only recent usage of a few hours after use, making it unsuitable for detecting long-term, habitual, or casual past use. This is one of the biggest reasons why they aren't requested often and why urine tests remain the favorite method. They are also invasive and in some places are more expensive than urine tests, one reason it requires the services of a phlebomotist to draw blood.

However, one advantage of serum drug tests oxycodone is more commonly measured from serum samples than urine samples. In the serum test that we run, all the drugs that are screened in the urine test are also screened in the serum test, but the serum test includes 2 more drugs, which are methamphetamine and oxycodone.
